Puffins
Puffins at Dyrholaey, near Vik. They only appear in the summertime.
-
Vik
Vik - centre of the world. The last town for almost 300 kilometres.
-
Near Kirkjubaejarklaustur
A rare sight of lush grass. Vegetation only accounts for 20% of land area in Iceland.
-
Lomagnupur
The ring road stopped here right up to the 1970's. Beyond lies a vast glacier and disaster-prone floodplain.

Lost on Ingolfshofdi
The first Norse settler landed on this little islet just off the south coast in 874 AD. You can now visit it by hay cart, but watch out, there are bomb-diving skuas and it's easy to lose the guide!

Hvannadalshnjukur
An inquisitive co-traveller takes some time off driving.
-
Jokulsarlon
The glacial lake where James Bond was filmed on a number of occasions. There are often seals here and you can sometimes hear and see icebergs crack and flip in the water.
-
Hofn
Many coastal towns have memorials to lost fishermen - this one is in the town of Hofn - 273 km from Vik.
-
Vagnsstadir Youth Hostel
Youth hostels are a little more rustic and personal in Iceland.
-
Berunes Youth Hostel
Dusk at this fantastic farmhouse-cum-youth hostel in the East Fjords.
-
Dettifoss
The most powerful waterfall in Europe.
-
Krafla
The lava is still warm from the 1984 eruption.
-
Hot spring cave
Hidden next to Myvatn is a hot spring cave in a huge fissure which divides Europe from America.
-
Hrisey
An enchanted isle in the fjord outside Akureyri. It's covered in purple heather and ptarmigan families which are similar to grouse.
-
Lighthouse
This lighthouse was next to a desserted coastal fishing village - one of many in the north and east of the country. When the herring failed to appear in 1969, the whole industry collapsed and many moved to Reykjavik.

Cod and Trash please
Not everything in Iceland is pretty. But at least there's lots of cheap fish.
